nairobi-giraffe Kenya lodge safaris – 10 Days

Day 1 Arrive Nairobi
Your Kenya lodge safaris begins with your arrival in the early morning at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where you are met and transferred to our hotel for breakfast and briefing before checking into our rooms. Lunch will be at the hotel on own arrangement. After lunch you depart for a visit of Karen Blixen Museum and the AFEW Centre, The two excursions will take you up to the setting of the Sun when you are transferred to the Carnivore restaurant for dinner. After dinner, you are transferred back to our hotel.
Overnight is at Nairobi Serena Hotel.

Day 2 Amboseli National Park
Depart after breakfast and drive south of Nairobi to arrive Amboseli National Park in time for lunch at our lodge. An afternoon game drive is planned for this day. This National Park embodies five main wildlife habitats (open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland). Amboseli is famous for its big game and its great scenic beauty – and the landscape is dominated by the towering Mount Kilimanjaro. The swamp below the observation hill hosts many elephants, buffaloes, hippos and a variety of water fowl like pelican, Egyptian goose among others.  Your Kenya lodge safaris then start its first afternoon game drive.

An early morning game drive is recommended before breakfast. The snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro is normally clearer in the early morning on clear day and makes a very photogenic background to the animals. Afternoon game drive in search of the different species of animals and birds this park has to offer.

Depart after breakfast and drive to Nairobi to continue your Kenya lodge safaris. After lunch proceed to Mount Kenya National Park arriving at our lodge later in the afternoon. The park includes a variety of habitats ranging from higher forest, bamboo, alpine moorlands, glaciers, tarns and glacial mountains. This Park, which, was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1997 and is also a Biosphere Reserve, covers 715 square km, and includes the peaks consisting of all the ground above 3,200 meters with two small salient extending lower down to 2,450 meters along the Sirimon and Naro Moru tracks. Surrounding the park is Mount Kenya National Reserve with an area of approximately 2,095 square km. Flora and fauna on Mount Kenya varies with altitude Spend the afternoon in comfort, watching the forest animals that come to the waterhole and salt lick. Some of the animals expected to be seen in this park include giant forest hog, tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, elephant, black rhino, suni, blackfronted duiker, mole- rat and over 130 species of bird. In the late afternoon the waterhole is floodlit so that the visitors are able to watch in silence and undercover. We spent the night at our “tree lodge”.

samburu-national-reserve Day 5 Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, your Kenya lodge safaris continues as you drive further north to Samburu on the south bank of the Uaso Nyiro River, downriver from Archer’s Post.  North of the Equator some of the animals and vegetation are a little different from those commonly found in the south. Elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and cheetah, as well as the usual buck and antelopes are common to both north and south of the equator.  However unusual animals in this area are the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Somali ostrich.  There is also the long neck gerenuk, beisa, and hunting dog.  Crocodiles in the river can be seen from the lodge.  The vegetation is usually dry grass with a few swampy patches. There is some forest cover along the Uaso Nyiro River and an abundance of Doum palms. Afternoon games drive.

Day 6 Samburu National Reserve
Morning and afternoon game viewing and exploration is planned for today in this harshly beautiful terrain where wildlife abound, especially near the river which is their only source of drinking water.  The Uaso Nyiro River flows gently through the dry landscape sustaining life in this harsh land.  In addition to Samburu, we’ll visit the Shaba National Reserve is where the famous conservationist George Adamson did his research on lions.

Day 7 Sweetwater’s Game Sanctuary
Leave after breakfast and drive to Nanyuki area arriving at your lodge in time for lunch, The Sweetwater Game Sanctuary is situated between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snowcapped Mount Kenya. It boasts an astounding variety of animals including the non-indigenous chimpanzees. Apart from the resident tame rhino named Morani, we also have black rhino, white rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, grevy zebra, giraffe, cheetah, Thomson’s gazelle, black-back jackal, ostrich, Grant’s gazelle, baboons, waterbuck, Oryx, eland and several hundred bird species. Afternoon game drive.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwater’s Tented Camp.  buffaloDay 8 Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast the tour leaves for Lake Nakuru National Park arriving in time for lunch at your African safari lodge.  Since there is no existing drainage, Lake Nakuru is alkaline, the perfect place for flamingos to feed on the blue-green algae.  The greater flamingo attains a height of about 4.26 feet; its plumage is almost white with a pale pink, black-tipped beak.  It is the lesser flamingo that has the more exotic color, and is about 2.72 ft. in height, with a rosy plumage and dark red, black-tipped beak. Lake Nakuru National Park has a great variety of bird life which includes the Egyptian goose and a variety of ducks that come from Europe to winter.  This park is truly a bird watchers paradise. The game animals include hippos, waterbuck, gazelles, Colobus monkeys, buffalo, leopard and the Rothschild giraffe.  The park is also a sanctuary for the white rhino.  This park has an abundance of acacia trees, both yellow barked (fever tree) the umbrella-topped acacia and the candelabra cactus. Afternoon game drive.

Day 9 Maasai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, you depart for Maasai Mara Game Reserve arriving at your lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon game drive in this reserve is planned. Maasai Mara is renowned for its high animal concentration and abundance. It is essentially the northern extension of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and is home to numerous plains game including Wildebeest, Cheetah, ostrich, common zebra and Maasai giraffe as well as antelopes like Thompson gazelle, hartbeest and Impala dikdik among others. The big five including lion, elphant, buffalo, rhino and leopard can also be traced.

Day 10 Maasai Mara Game Reserve
On the last full day of your Kenya lodge safaris you have a full day in the Mara with morning and afternoon game drives exploring of this – Kenya’s finest reserve.  You may witness a lion making a kill or a leopard enjoying the meal, after dragging it up the tree with him.  The vegetation is mostly savanna type, with forested areas near the rivers, and of course the dwarf acacias which the giraffes cater on.  More than 60 species of animals are found here, as well as countless bird species, including the Maasai ostrich and the secretary bird.  This is where the great migration of the wildebeest takes place.

Day 11 Nairobi Depart Africa
After breakfast, we drive back to Nairobi arriving early afternoon. Lunch is on own arrangement. Dayrooms will be provided at the Nairobi Serena Hotel.  You are free to explore Nairobi and possibly do some last minute shopping, before your evening transfer back to the airport for your departure.End of Service
